Google’s Matt Cutts on content duplication penalty

Wanting to syndicate one’s own content is nothing new, but how Google interprets copies of your original content distributed throughout the web has always been up for speculation. Well, Matt Cutts stepped up and provided an answer to the question “should content owners be concerned about syndicating their own original content?“ The answer: No, as long as you do it thoughtfully.

Do’s and don’ts for content syndication:

- Multiple versions of an article on a white-hat site won’t trip any alarms for Google. You can have a full-length version, a paginated version, and a print version, for example, without worry.
- If you do have multiple versions, you can help Google by excluding duplicate versions from indexing
- Don’t carpet bomb the web with your content. Syndicate thoughtfully
- Be sure syndicated content has a link back to the original source on your web site so credit is applied where credit is due.
